Often we think of furthering our education as difficult and wonder how we can do that with everything we have going on in our life. We may also believe it is too late for us because we missed our chance. It is never too late to use education to improve our situation. My mother was working as a paraprofessional in the school system when she went back to work after raising her kids. She realized that she was doing the same work a teacher was doing but getting substantially less pay. At the age of 52 she decided to finish a degree she had started 34 years earlier. It was not easy, but she was determined to do it. She spent two years attending extension classes and even had to spend a quarter on campus,”with the young kids.” We were very proud of her. Her position as a teacher paid for all of mine and two brothers’ missions. I will be ever grateful for her sacrifice. It not only gave her a better paying position, but it enriched her life. We often forget that education is more than just for a better career. “The glory of God is intelligence.” We know that what we learn here will be one thing we can take with us when we die.
