Doing Good to All Men – Giving Service

When I was a deacon, and our ward had a service project, followed by a potluck dinner, I learned the power of giving service wholeheartedly. We were each given a certain portion of the task to complete before we ate dinner. There was about a half hour to complete the service portion and then we would join for the potluck dinner. When the time for eating came, almost everyone left work and raced to get in line.

Practical Courses with Spiritual Benefits

The Lord has said, “It is my purpose to provide for my saints . . . but it must needs be done in mine own way” (Doctrine and Covenants 104:15, 16). This is a promise that Heavenly Father will help take care of His children as they follow Him. Self-reliance does not mean that we can accomplish or obtain anything we want. If we are self-reliant we believe that through the power of Christ, and through our own effort, we can work for the spiritual and practical needs of life. Many people can become more self-reliant. With Self Reliance Groups much of the work takes place in small groups that combine spiritual principles with practical skills.

The next Self-Reliance Groups are scheduled to begin in September 2024. Groups will be organized based on individual interests.

9/11 Day of Service and Remembrance

Honor. Serve. Unite.

Twenty-three ago on September 11, 2001, many lost their lives to the 9/11 attacks. In the days and weeks following those attacks, Americans came together in a spirit of unity and service to others. In 2009 Congress established 9/11 as a recurring National Day of Service and Remembrance. On 9/11 and during that week, we honor those heroes by uniting in service and volunteerism throughout our communities. You can help unite and strengthen America by focusing on building a brighter future. Join together in a common cause to perform acts of service individually, in your family, in your neighborhood, community, state, or nation.

The Brigham City South Stake has agreed to help support a project at the New Hope Crisis Center.

Strategies to Strengthen Your Family’s Future

As you nurture your growing family, your focus is often on the joys of building a life together and cherishing everyday moments. While it’s essential to savor the present, it’s equally important not to neglect estate planning, regardless of how distant it may seem. Establishing a comprehensive estate plan at any age can provide future security and greater peace of mind for your loved ones. This is particularly crucial for families with young children, as it includes legal provisions for guardianship. If you’re a young or growing family, the following estate planning tips for young families may help you protect your assets and strengthen your family’s future.

Mistakes and Problems

A little while ago, we decided to visit Coleen’s dad and stepmother in Salt Lake City. They live in a gated community, so I took a quick peek at the gate code before leaving. Pulling up to the gate I entered what I knew was the correct code 1234#. Nothing happened. So, I entered the code again 1234#. Still nothing I got a little bit frustrated, but knowing that I knew the number, I entered it again 1234# – still absolutely nothing.

Reservoirs

Recently my sweetheart Coleen and I traveled to southern Utah to my ancestral home in Piute County. One thing that we noticed immediately was that the Piute reservoir was full. We had begun to be used to it looking like a great big giant mud hole. However, with adequate rain and snow this year, the reservoir was filled to the top.
I thought about my great-grandfather James Willard Bay Junior…

Home Visions and Reality

My sweetheart Coleen has a vision for what is important to create a beautiful home and yard. When we purchased our home in 1993 the yard did not look like what Coleen wanted it to look like. Little by little we have worked and changed it to better meet her vision. My efforts have been primarily to provide some of the brute force that has been required because so far, I do not have the vision to see the final result that Coleen does.

April 2024 Prep Step: Eggs

https://www.incredibleegg.org tells us that: Eggs are an all-natural, nutrient-dense source of high-quality protein. Each large egg contains six grams of protein and is a good or excellent source of eight essential nutrients all for just 70 calories and less than 1 gram of carbohydrates. Because of their nutrient content, eggs can play a role in weight management, muscle strength, brain function, eye health, and more.
Nutrition research has revealed that eating eggs with salad increases the absorption of vitamin E by seven times. Additionally, the same researchers at Purdue University published another study showing the absorption of carotenoids from a salad was improved by adding a cooked egg.
Bottom line — put an egg on it!

Ancient and Modern – Preparation and Disasters

Searching the Book of Mormon and studying an emergency preparedness class (CERT) recently, I realized that the world experienced a great degree of destruction when Jesus Christ died. This was the biggest natural disaster since the time of The Flood. I began to wonder what it would feel like if I had lived in Bountiful then.

If Financial Communication Doesn’t Come Naturally, You’re Not Alone

Money conversations with your spouse are imperative when you want to achieve joint goals, and yet they don’t always come easily. Money is a very personal topic, and many people are not accustomed to discussing it. It can be downright perplexing when your spouse refuses to work on a budget with you, create financial goals and objectives, or talk about a habit that may need to be addressed. Perhaps they are actively avoiding or even refusing to discuss a specific issue, or maybe they simply fail to engage when you raise a topic. Regardless, if you want to jump-start money conversations with your spouse, it’s helpful to first begin with why they are practicing avoidance.

Snowbanked

On Wednesday, January 17, I had an appointment. Unfortunately, that morning Brigham City got hit with a big snowstorm. When I finally got myself together enough to leave the house, I was dismayed to see that snow covered the driveway. With the idea of making my job easier, I decided to just pull my car out of the garage and cross the driveway into the street without shoveling. It worked well until I got to the gutter in my little car and bogged down to a total stop.

Education

Often we think of furthering our education as difficult and wonder how we can do that with everything we have going on in our life. We may also believe it is too late for us because we missed our chance. It is never too late to use education to improve our situation. My mother was working as a paraprofessional in the school system when she went back to work after raising her kids. She realized that she was doing the same work a teacher was doing but getting substantially less pay. At the age of 52 she decided to finish a degree she had started 34 years earlier. It was not easy, but she was determined to do it.

Better Together

Ever since I learned to read, I have enjoyed immersing myself in the worlds that authors create. When I was young, I was drawn to the genre of literature that featured a young person trying to survive alone in the wilderness using their skills, wits, and tools against the harsh forces of nature and wild animals. Being the oldest of seven children, I often felt the need to escape. The fantasy of surviving without anyone’s help was very appealing to me.

Grateful for What Matters Most

Last week, we celebrated Thanksgiving and took the time to reflect on all the blessings that our loving Heavenly Father has bestowed upon us. For most of us, this meant spending quality time with family and friends, enjoying yummy food, and expressing gratitude for all the good things in our lives.

I remember a particular Thanksgiving when I was seven years old.

Prep Step for October, 2023: Squash

WHAT IS A SQUASH?

First things first. Is squash a fruit or a vegetable? Squash are fruits. They contain seeds and come from the flowering part of a plant. This is why tomatoes and eggplant are also fruits (despite having savory flavor profiles). Many squash have a mild nutty flavor and smooth texture that makes us think of them as a vegetable, and they definitely lack the natural sugar of most fruits.

There are two main categories of squash:
