It’s the end of November and thoughts of Christmas are in the air. The stores are already outfitted in their Christmas finery. Some people I know have already completed their Christmas shopping. Preparing for Winter

For the last couple of weeks, we have been trying to get things ready for winter. Among the more traditional activities for this preparation, we worked on preparing our yard and garden. My sweetheart, Coleen, and I (truthfully, it was more her than me) have been pulling dead and dying plants. We have raked leaves and for us lots and lots of acorns out of our lawn.

Food for Thought

Have you ever wondered what the ‘pulses’ were that Daniel and his friends preferred to eat while in the king’s house? Daniel and his friends preferred to eat plant-based foods instead of the heavy meat-based meals of the king. Pulses are defined as the edible seeds of legumes.

Remembering – Family History Helps Our Self Reliance

On our recent vacation, we spent some time in Seattle, one of the places I had lived while growing up. My sweetheart, Coleen, was very good-natured, even though she was probably less excited than I was to see the places. We stopped and saw the houses that I had lived in. We drove by the schools I attended; the track where I really learned to run. And I even showed her the paper route I’d had as a 12-year-old, where I first earned money from sources other than my family. >>Click Here for More<<

Food for Thought

I have just read a couple of books on emergency preparedness. One starts out with what happened on September 11, 2001, and the shock and horror of that day. Besides all airplanes being ordered to land at the nearest airport immediately, businesses and schools were disrupted, most shutting down not knowing what would happen as the day progressed. I can’t think of anyone who was prepared emotionally that day. >>Click Here for More<<

Have Faith in the Future

Recently Elder D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles presided at a leadership conference in our region. I was among the many who were not invited to be there. However, after hearing reports from some of those who attended, I have gained some information that has caused me to think and ponder.

Members were encouraged to do the following.

  • Have faith in the future – do not fear the future.
  • Keep the Savior and our covenants at the center of our lives.
  • Stay on that covenant path.

ESTATE PLANNING’S THREE REASONS WHY

An estate plan is your opportunity to indicate how you want your property, belongings, and financial assets distributed after you die. Without a written plan, you leave these personal choices up to state law and probate courts.  You also risk damaged relationships in your family over disagreements over the division of your assets.

Sanitation in a Disaster

Human waste is one of the deadliest substances on earth.

Where sanitation is poor, death & disease are rampant. Our current systems for disposing of waste can be affected by many situations. If we lose water, we lose sewer. If we lose power for an extended time, we also lose sewer. In an earthquake or landslide sewer lines can rupture.

In each of these scenarios, our instincts might be to use a camp potty, an RV or even dig a pit latrine. These solutions are very dangerous if we don’t know how to properly set up and dispose of the waste. They will bring animals, vermin and insects into our environment that spread disease.

Exposure to human waste will make your family very sick.

Preparing with Fences and Cows

Last week my sweetheart, Coleen, and I joined some of our children and grandchildren for some relaxation at a family recreation spot in southern Utah in the mountains just above a town named Junction. We were the first to arrive. When we came to the point where we could see the property, I was very concerned, because there were five cows with their calves inside the fence. My Grandad, who was a cattle rancher and provided this property as a family legacy, seldom intentionally put cows on the property. Cows and cabins and other human comforts do not do well together. >>Click Here for More<<

If Self-Care is not selfish – Then why is it so difficult for so many of us to make time for ourselves?

Recently I had the opportunity to explain to my kids what the term Y2K stands for. Reflecting back on what was “known” and “unknown” about how the clocks, banking systems, government operations, utilities, computers, etc. would all handle the change from Dec 31, 1999 to Jan 1, 2000 was a source of speculation, planning, preparation, and fear. Shortly after New Year’s day, the unknowns all seemed to be answered, yet the emotions, feelings and concerns before 1/1/2000 were still impactful, emotional and challenging. >>Click Here for More<<

Food for Thought

We have been asked what kind of protein can be added to home storage. Protein is important for muscle maintenance and growth. One source of protein from the Home Storage Center is beans. We have three types of beans available in #10 cans. The protein per cup of cooked beans is different for each type of bean: White (17 grams), black (15 grams), and pinto (15 grams). Each have several types of minerals and some B vitamins as well. Beans can be served in many ways, some possibilities: Soups, casseroles, chili, salads, pureed and used in place of oils and in baked goods. There are many recipes online and in cookbooks to give you ideas for the many ways beans can be used. If you are storing beans as your protein, be sure to store rice because beans are not a complete protein in themselves, and rice will contribute the rest of the nutrients to make a complete protein. You do not need to eat beans and rice together (though there are very good recipes for this duo), but you will need to eat one of each sometime during the day to make that a complete protein. >>Click Here for More<<

Times and Seasons

I remember a time as I was about seven years old visiting my grandparents, Vera and Martel Anderson, Gram and Grandad, in southern Utah on their cattle ranch in Junction. Grandad took me with him to go up the canyon to check on his property which he called the Ponderosa Ranch, but everyone else called the Cougar Ranch. Grandad covered his bald head with a Stetson hat, while my tow head crewcut was covered with a straw cowboy hat. Grandad was on his big gray horse, Cyclone, and I followed on his grandchild-proof Shetland pony, Buddy. >>Click Here for More<<

Be Prepared – The World Around Us May Fail

I recently attended a political convention. Due to problems with the technology that was supposed to count the votes, the meeting got extended to twice the length that was planned. The organizers were working diligently, nevertheless, they were not prepared for the technical failure that occurred. There was not a backup plan that was in place from the beginning. There was a great deal of frustration. The leaders of the event were struggling, they were just some regular people who got chosen to lead, but things did not work well. They were overwhelmed. Patience was wearing thin with those who were attending and trying to do their civic duty. >>Click Here for More<<
