Self-reliance is so overwhelming. There are so many different approaches. Why should I work on it? What should I prepare? How do I do it?
During the past week, I, as well as many of you, spent time with family and extended family. I appreciate and love every one of them. Each is making life choices for themselves. Every one of them is choosing to do things differently than I would select for myself. I have different circumstances, as well as my unique interests, abilities, and talents. They are making their individual paths through life. I like to be with them and to learn about their individual journeys.
At our house, my sweetheart, Coleen, has decorated for Christmas and also Christmas music fills our home. We look back with gratitude to the humble birth of Jesus Christ and all that he has done for each of us and our salvation. I am reminded that the Scriptures declare that He will come again in great glory to a struggling world. We know that we are moving closer to that day. We are taught that there will be great trials and tribulations “but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear.” (D&C 38:30)
It is because I know the Savior is coming coupled with my love for my family and my desire to be with them eternally that motivates me to want to be prepared. My path of preparation will be different from yours. Preparation involves many aspects.
From the General Handbook: Serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:
With help from the Lord, members build self-reliance in the following ways:
- Develop spiritual, physical, and emotional strength.
- Gain education and employment.
- Improve temporal preparedness.
And from Gospel Topics under Food Storage:
In this newsletter, Sister Sherry Christensen has an article about some simple steps that may fit what your family needs.
After you were baptized, hands were laid on your head and by priesthood authority you were told to “receive the Holy Ghost”. As you seek guidance, He will give you direction for your personal and family preparedness.
I wish each of you a great Christmas season including loving interactions with friends and family. And I hope you will find some progress on your individual path to Self Reliance, which is part of the covenant path leading back to Heavenly Father.
